Survey App Development

Based on survey content provided by investigators, a custom program is created to administer surveys on a smartphone or tablet.

DREAM staff create custom surveys and alarm schedules to be administered on the mobile devices using proprietary computer software. Survey development costs are based on the amount of time it takes for DREAM staff to program and test the surveys, and on the number of devices that will use the survey software. The number, length, and complexity of the surveys influence the cost of development. Currently DREAM services only support Android(TM) operating systems.

First Steps

  • Welcome to the study!
  • How long did it take you to fall asleep last night?
  • How happy do you feel right now?
  • Since the last assessment, how many social interactions did you have?
  • Since the last assessment, which of the following caffeinated products did you consume?
  • How many minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity did you engage in today?
  • Which of the following types of stressors have you experienced since the last assessment?
  • You selected the Before Bed Survey
  • On the following page you will be asked to enter your weight today
  • Enter your weight below
  • In the box below, enter what you ate
  • Include the type of food, approximate amount, and description of how it was prepared if applicable

DREAM staff can begin working on your survey program after you have accepted the proposed budget and submitted study materials to the IRB. We will need the final set of questions you would like included in the surveys. There are several options for survey layout and features that can be specified in the Survey Information Form. Download and complete the DREAM Survey Information Form and return it with a copy of your study’s final survey questions to dream-projects@survey.psu.edu . After submitting this information, it will take approximately 6-8 weeks before you will receive the final survey program.

Survey App Testing

Before we deliver your customized application, our staff conducts extensive testing to verify that all components are working properly. However, we strongly encourage investigators to allow time for their research team to pilot test the applications prior to field deployment.
